Thirteen years ago tonight, on October 6, 1998, Matthew Shepard was brutally attacked and left to die, simply because he was gay. He was found almost a full day later tied to a fence, and died in the hospital on October 12. When he was found, the only parts of his face that were not covered in blood were the small streaks where his tears had fallen. Since that day, Matthew has become a symbol for the hate and discrimination against the LGBTQ community. We have come so far in those thirteen years, but we still have a long way to go.

so i have a friend who actually used to be a teacher of mine who is in town and i was hanging out with her. she doesn’t know me super well enough to know i’m gay (although it’s super obvious) and i’ve never mentioned it just because. well we were gossiping about some people we know. one of which is a woman who is marrying her partner in July. so this is how i find out that my friend “does not approve” of gay people basically. this makes me so sad. i didn’t say anything. but i plan on telling her that i am gay soon. it really breaks my heart. in a way i’m scared to tell her i’m gay cuz i’m scared of being rejected as a friend. but then i think that if that’s the case, it’s her loss right? idk. this just really sucks :/
